Rj and I were looking for a restaurant where we can celebrate our 9th anniversary. We weren’t sure where we wanted to eat until we saw a Facebook video from Singapore Beauty of New Thai Tanic. Right there and then, we have already decided that we wanted to spend our anniversary there. Since this year’s Lunar New Year fell on 16th of February, the New Thai Tanic had a promotion of unlimited lobster and steamboat from CNY eve 15th of February 2018 up until 2nd of March 2018. However, our anniversary is on the 14th of February, therefore, we decided to celebrate it a day later so we can enjoy the unlimited lobster *wink*.
New Thai Tanic is Singapore’s first live seafood barbeque buffet and it is relatively new. Located at 191 Joo Chiat Rd, this restaurant serves a wide variety of fresh seafood where you can choose to cook with a steamboat, grill or both!
The restaurant is small and not as spacious as those grand buffet restaurants in Singapore. Upon entrance, you’ll be greeted by a boat-shaped counter with a bed of ice, with some of the fresh seafood up for grabs.
On one side are the tanks with live shrimps, crabs, oysters and clams.
Lobsters are by request, and again, they were offering it for free that time. It is better to ask first and make sure if they charge additional for the lobster.
They also offer cooked seafood dish like cereal prawns, crabs, fried rice , etc.– which you can eat while you are waiting for your fresh seafood to get cooked.
Along side the cooked dishes are raw meats and veggies to give the diners other options.
On the opposite side are the beverages, make-your-own Rojak/waffles/fried-finger foods, and, of course, my personal favorite- the ice cream bar.
They also have cheese for dipping! Get as much as you want, cheese-lovers!
Most of the BBQ buffet here in Singapore are electric powered and I love that they use charcoals instead, as it just gives that extra smokey flavor to the food.
At the end of our meal, they gave us mixed fruits to cap our munching. Sorry, we forgot to take a photo of it.
PROS:
-A decent amount of food choices.
-Ready cooked food are delicious.
-Good marinated meat section
-Staffs are very welcoming and approachable.
-They change/add/reduce the charcoal from time to time.
-They also change the wire grill from time to time.
CONS:
-Food are quite small (but you can go with quantity)
-Some of the staffs can’t communicate in English
-The table is quite small, especially for the 2 seater table.
PRICE
Buffet (Adult) – S$59.90/pax
Towel – S$0.50/pc
Service charge 10%
GST 7%
It will cost you around S$70.00++ per pax. Note: Lobsters and steamboats are on promotion during this time
We find the price reasonable. Seafood here in Singapore are darn expensive, just an order of a chilli crab already costs $30-$100+ each. So, yes, S$70.00++ for a seafood buffet is okay.
CONCLUSION
The restaurant is very promising and still have a lot to improve, but definitely, it is not disappointing.
Like always, I enjoyed all the food—who doesn’t like seafood anyway?
